When Is the Best Time to Visit Sonoma Wine Country?

December 20, 2025

One of the questions we’re asked most often by guests is:
“When is the best time to visit Sonoma Wine Country?”

And truthfully? It’s a hard one to answer—because Sonoma is beautiful year-round, and each season brings its own rhythm, energy, and kind of magic. The best time to visit really depends on the kind of getaway you’re dreaming of: lively and social, slow and cozy, food-forward, or fully unplugged.

Here’s how we think about the seasons here at The Wolf & Horseshoe.

SPRING: FRESH BLOOMS & EASY DAYS (MARCH–MAY)

Spring is one of the most refreshing times to visit Sonoma, especially if you’re looking for mild weather, fewer crowds, and an easy going Wine Country Pace — spring is when Sonoma starts to stretch and wake up. The hills turn impossibly green, wildflowers bloom along back roads, and the air feels fresh and light. Days are mild and comfortable—ideal for hiking, long scenic drives, and relaxed tasting room visits before summer crowds arrive.

This is one of our favorite times to suggest:

  • Morning walks and hikes (Jack London State Park is a favorite)
  • Coastal drives out toward Bodega Bay, the Russian River or a beach on the Sonoma Coast
  • Unhurried tastings where you don’t feel the need to rush

At the house, spring means doors open, coffee outside, and evenings that invite a blanket and a glass of wine as the sun dips early. It’s a wonderful season for guests who love nature, calm energy, and space to explore.

SUMMER: SUNSHINE DAYS & LONG-TABLE NIGHTS (JUNE–AUGUST)

Summer is peak season in Sonoma Wine Country, with sunny days, lively winery visits, and a full calendar of events. It’s Sonoma at its most vibrant. Festivals come into full swing (Bottlerock included!), patios are buzzing, and the energy across Wine Country is undeniably fun.

At The Wolf & Horseshoe, this is when our mantra—sunshine days + long-table nights—really comes to life. Think pool afternoons, outdoor dinners that stretch late into the evening, and a full calendar of events across the region.

Summer is perfect for guests who:

  • Love a lively, social atmosphere
  • Want warm weather and full winery access
  • Enjoy pairing their stay with events, concerts, and celebrations

Because it’s peak season, we always recommend booking well in advance.

FALL: HARVEST SEASON & GOLDEN LIGHT (SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER)

For many visitors, fall is considered the best time to visit Sonoma for wine lovers, thanks to harvest season and warm days paired with cool evenings. Fall in Sonoma is something special. Often referred to as our “Indian Summer,” days are beautifully warm, evenings cool off just enough for fireside conversations, and the vineyards hum with harvest energy.

Around the property, fall means:

  • Pool days that still feel indulgent
  • Produce coming straight from local farms—and ours—making every meal feel truly farm-to-table
  • Golden light that photographers (and sunset lovers) dream about

It’s an ideal season for wine lovers, food enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience Sonoma at its most iconic.

WINTER: COZY, QUIET & SURPRISINGLY MAGICAL (NOVEMBER–FEBRUARY)

Winter is an ideal time to visit Sonoma if you’re seeking a quieter, more intimate Wine Country experience. Winter may be our best-kept secret—and, if we’re honest, possibly our favorite time of year here.

With fewer crowds and a slower pace, Sonoma feels intimate and deeply relaxing. Mornings are misty and quiet, fireplaces are in use, and the landscape takes on a softer, moodier beauty.

Highlights we love sharing with guests:

  • The Sonoma Plaza lit up for the holidays and easy, thoughtful gift shopping
  • January and February mustard blooms, when bright yellow fields stretch beneath towering valley oaks
  • Coastal days that feel wild and refreshing—think Tomales Bay or Bodega Bay, oysters and crab for lunch, and long walks along vast Pacific beaches
  • A front-row seat to the seasons — our November olive harvest, winter walnut gathering, and the arrival of adorably curious lambs in January and February, a guest favorite that makes winter feel especially alive here.

Winter is perfect for romantic escapes, creative retreats, and anyone craving stillness and space to breathe.
