How to Prepare for Your Wine Country Vacation Rental Stay

January 28, 2026

One of the things we love most about hosting at The Wolf & Horseshoe is that no two stays look exactly the same. Some guests arrive with a full itinerary of tastings and reservations, while others come with a single goal: to slow down, exhale, and see where the days take them.

That said, a little thoughtful preparation can help you settle in quickly and make the most of your time in Sonoma Wine Country. Here are a few gentle tips we often share with guests before they arrive.

TAKE A MINUTE TO REVIEW ARRIVAL DETAILS

A few days before your stay, we’ll reach out with everything you need to know about arrival, parking, and check-in. Most guests appreciate having this handy—especially after a day of travel—so they can arrive and slip right into vacation mode.

If anything is unclear or timing shifts, just let us know. We’re always happy to coordinate and make arrival feel easy.

PACK FOR SONOMA’S EASY-GOING (AND EVER CHANGING) WEATHER

Sonoma’s climate is part of its charm—and also one of its surprises. Days are often warm and sunny, while evenings can cool down quickly, especially in summer.

Our best advice: layers.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket or sweater for evenings, and sun protection for long days outdoors. If coastal walks or hikes are on your list, packing with those in mind will keep things effortless once you’re here.

Sonoma style tends to surprise first-time visitors. The vibe here is best described as elevated casual—comfortable, unfussy, and polished without feeling overly dressed up. We often suggest pieces that move easily from tasting rooms to long lunches and evening dinners: sundresses, nice jeans with a blouse, a relaxed blazer, and—most importantly—comfortable shoes that can handle gravel paths and vineyard terrain. Layers like a sweater or denim jacket go a long way, and a small crossbody bag keeps things easy while you’re out exploring.

PLAN A LITTLE —BUT LEAVE ROOM TO WANDER

During busier seasons, wineries, restaurants, and experiences can book up in advance, so it’s helpful to plan a few key reservations ahead of time. We’re always glad to share recommendations based on what you enjoy—wine, food, outdoors, or all of the above.

At the same time, some of our guests’ favorite moments come from unplanned afternoons: a spontaneous stop at the coast, a long lunch that turns into sunset, or an evening spent right at the house.

Sonoma rewards both planning and spontaneity.

BE READY TO BRING A LITTLE SONOMA HOME WITH YOU

One gentle heads-up we like to share: many guests end up leaving with more wine than they planned. Whether you’re shipping bottles home or packing them in your suitcase, having a wine travel sleeve or extra space in your bag can be surprisingly helpful. Sonoma has a way of turning “just one bottle” into a few favorites you’ll be glad you didn’t leave behind.

ENJOY THE SIMPLE LUXURY OF STAYING IN

One of the joys of a vacation rental is the ability to make yourself at home. Many guests love stopping at a local market or farm stand to pick up a few fresh ingredients for casual meals during their stay.

At The Wolf & Horseshoe, there are plenty of ways to enjoy them—gathered around the long table under the lights, perched at the outdoor bar, or cozied up by the fire pit as the evening sets in. Sometimes the best meals are the ones you don’t rush out for.

SHARE ANYTHING THAT HELPS US HOST YOU BETTER

If you’re celebrating something special, traveling with a group, or have particular needs or questions, reaching out ahead of time allows us to personalize your stay whenever possible.

We truly enjoy helping guests prepare for their visit, whether that means sharing local tips or simply answering a quick question. Don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to make your Wine Country stay feel relaxed, thoughtful, and memorable.

Warmly,

Rusti & Martin
